He was roaming the streets when was found by the Gem Project. In order to survive, Alfred hustled to get money for food. As he was living on the streets and indulging in social wrongs, he did not attend school. Alfred was given all the support from the Gem Project to change his life. He successfully completed the Gem Adult Education and Training Program in 2018 as well as various other vocational and work readiness courses. With the support of the Gem Project and through his own will and drive to change, he turned his life around. Alfred’s’ passion and love for children, coupled with the child and youth care development training and internship received by the Gem Project opened up opportunities for him. Alfred proved himself to be a youth peer coach and ambassador of the Gem Project. He moved on to become a Youth Facilitator and Surfing Life-coach with a local youth development organisation. As a commitment to the Gem and in giving-back, Alfred facilitated that his new employer provides surfing and life-skills coaching to the Gem Juniors and Seniors. He is a success story and serves as a youth ambassador for the project. Alfred is doing what he loves,  namely surfing and life skills coaching whilst building a career and giving back to his peers at the same time.
